Famous for absinthe alcohol production up to 1915, and then for its ban thereafter, Pontarlier has become a popular place for tourists to visit. Recently the ban has been partially lifted and this has resulted in some distilleries once again producing absinthe. The town was also mentioned in the well known novel 'Les Miserables' written by Victor Hugo.

Transport

The French high speed rail network (TGV) travels direct from Paris to Pontarlier twice a day with a travel time of around three hours. Trains leaving from Lyon to Pontarlier take around two hours.

The Pontarlier Rail Station is conveniently located close to the town centre. The station has basic facilities such as toilets, newsagents, ATMs and vending machines. There are restaurants and cafes located outside of the station.
