Fontainebleau Station Guide

Wonderfully located in France's largest state forest, the small village of Fontainebleau is a popular weekend getaway for residents of Paris. The gardens in the village are truly spectacular. Trains to the Fontainebleau Rail Station depart from Gare de Lyon in Paris and take about 45 minutes.

The Fontainebleau Rail Station offers basic facilities for passengers, including car rental service by Avis. To secure the best selection and price, book a hire car online in advance. Several hotels, including the long established Victoria Hotel Fontainebleau, are ideally positioned within a short distance of the railway station.

Fontainebleau offers a variety of lodging establishments to accommodate visitors along with several outstanding cafs and restaurants. Don't miss the wonderful English Garden with its charming cascades, the gorgeous Blaud Fountain and a carp pond. Also of interest are the Garden of Diana and its courtyards. These superb gardens offer some challenging hikes, so be sure to wear suitable shoes.

Car hire is the most comfortable way to explore the fine attractions of the surrounding Ile de France region. Situated nearby on Fontainebleau Forest's edge is the serene hamlet of Barbizon, home to several acclaimed 19th century painters who developed a remarkable way of capturing landscapes. Barbizon was also Robert Louis Stevenson's home.

Also nearby and easily accessible by car is Moret sur Loing, the medieval town that inspired famous artists such as Rousseau, Millet, Diaz, and Daumier. The homes of Rousseau and Millet shouldn't be missed.
