One of France's oldest cities, Clermont Ferrand is well known for the extinct volcanoes that surround the city. Clermont Ferrand is situated around the midpoint of the Paris-Nimes rail line, making it an ideal stopping point in the Auvergne region. The construction of the Cathdrale Notre Dame de l'Assomption spanned over several centuries, beginning in the 13th century and finally reaching completion in 1902. Made of black volcanic rock, it is one of the city's most impressive sights. The 11th century Romanesque Notre Dame du Port has some intricate decor on display and was built from yellow sandstone.
