Driving in France entails following similar rules to those seen in the United Kingdom and the enforcement of regulations is fairly rigid. Be aware that driving takes place on the right side of the road and breathalyser kits are now compulsory in all motor vehicles. Dangerous wintertime conditions are common in the Chambery area and those without experience in such scenarios are advised to use extreme caution on icy roadways.

See our guide to France for more information on driving here.

There are a handful of options for ground transportation from Chambery Airport, with car hire being perhaps the best combination of value for money and convenience. Alternatively, those headed into town can make use of taxis, which can be very expensive. There are also regional coach transfers and public bus services into the city.

Taxis can be acquired from the rank outside the arrival doors in front of the terminal building. The journey to the city takes around 15 minutes.

There is now a public stop directly in front of the terminal (turn to the left as you walk out) with service to the rail station and the city centre; the journey usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Look for the Trans’Neige sign. For those heading to nearby ski resorts, numerous direct coach links are available to several popular destinations including Val d'Isere, Meribel, Les Archs, Chamonix and dozens of others.
