Located in the Alsace region of France, Sarre Union lies near the German border. With a population of less than 5,000 inhabitants, this quaint little town is right on the Saar River and is a popular destination for those wanting to get away from the big city.
Located 50 miles (80kms) from Metz and 38 miles (60kms) from Strasbourg, Sarre Union is closer to its German counterpart, and the city of Saarbruecken is only 22 miles (35kms) away. In fact, the Sarre Union was only formerly established in 1794, when the towns of Bouquenom and Neu-Saarwerden joined together.
The highlight of Sarre Union is its surrounding nature and forests. Many visitors come here to enjoy long walks and hikes. This region has many Roman archeological sites, as well as caves where many Roman artifacts have been found.
The Regional Museum in Sarre Union is worth a visit. It showcases the history of the region and its close links with Germany, as well as the many archeological finds in the region. There are also several churches and chapels, although they are not quite as old as those in other regions in France, with most dating from between the 15th and 18th centuries. The Eglise de Bouquenom is also an interesting place to stop off.
Sarre Union is a small village and exploring on foot is the easiest and best way. However, since most visitors come to Sarre Union as part of a trip through the Alsace region, the best form of transport is a hire car. This allows visitors short trips into Germany, if they wish. A rental car can easily be arranged online in advance.
