Located on the northern shore of the Gulf of Saint Tropez is the coastal city of Saint-Maxime nestled in the heart of the French Riviera. It is situated ninety kilometers from Nice and one hundred and thirty kilometers from Marseilles and has a population of nearly 12,000 residents. Naturally the major industry is tourism and there is a ferry service operated by Les Bateaux Verts that will transport residents and tourists across the gulf to the city of Saint Tropez.

To the north of the city is the Massif des Maures mountain range which provides Saint-Maxime with protection from the cold winds of the Mistral. The Mistral is the cold, dry, strong wind that blows during the winter and spring months. Originating in the north and northwestern areas of Europe, the Mistral blows through the valley of the Rhone to the Mediterranean Sea, so one can understand why the locals appreciate the Massif des Maures the way they do.

Whether one chooses to tour the city by foot, harness and buggy or by rental car, there are many leisure activities and sports to entice the visitor. The open-air market and shops stock a variety of food and non-food items; there are two wonderful natural history museums and arts and crafts abound as well. For those looking for evening entertainment, there are three clubs / discos, a casino, a cinema and the always popular Theater-off-the-Sea with its summer concert venue.
