Rodez Guide

Guide

At the heart of the Aveyron region lies the old capital of Rouergue, Rodez, located in the province of the Midi-Pyrenees, in the south of France. Its geographical position, sitting between the dry plates of Causses and the wet hills of Sogala, makes it an interesting place to visit. The mountains of Aubrac and the forest of Palanges give this town a scenic panorama, and make it great for hiring a car and driving through. Prebook cheap car hire in Rodez and experience the most out of your holiday here.

Explore Rodez

We highly recommend tourists to visit Rodez's old town, which exhibits the very large red sandstone 'Cathédrale Notre-Dame', constructed in 1277, and located along place d’Armes.

Heading south tourists will come across Place Rozie, situated outside of the Maison Cannoniale. From here, medieval streets connect Place de la Prefecture, Place de-Gaulle and Place du Bourg.

There is an abundance of eateries, one of the best being La Taverne, located at 23 rue de l'Embergue, which has local cuisine at reasonable prices. For gourmet cuisine, try the Gouts et Couleurs on 38 rue Bonald.

The region of Aveyron, with its rolling hills and majestic gorges, is an excellent place for rambling. There are towns and villages in every direction from Rodez, including the beautiful village of Conques, famous for its medieval artefacts. An hours drive south and tourists will come across the Millau Suspension Bridge (pictured above). Definitely worth a visit if you have the time.

Transport

Rodez Airport, also referred to as Aeroport Rodez-Marcillac, is located around 12kms north of Rodez, on route to Decazeville, Salles la Source, Aveyron, and Midi-Pyrines. It is served by daily flights from London, Paris and Lyon. By car, you can take the A75 from Paris to Severac and the N88 on to Rodez. Car hire suppliers operate from the airport, but we highly advise all travellers to book in advance before arriving at the airport, as prices can be very expensive.

Rodez is accessible by rail from most cities, and also has a good road connection with the main A75 motorway.

By road from Toulouse, head north on the A68 (Toulouse-Albi) motorway, connecting with the N88 highway to Rodez. From Paris, take the A10 to Orleans, connecting with the A71 (Orleans-Clermont Ferrand) motorway. From here, follow the A75 as far as it goes, then head west on the N88 to Rodez. Distances are 170kms and 650kms, respectively.

Trains operate hourly from Paris Gare d'Austerlitz, via Toulouse to Rodez. Toulouse is 6 hours, and Rodez is 8 hours train journey from Paris. Only two direct trains operate to Paris daily, one of which travels overnight, taking just over eight hours. Approximately five trains operate daily from Marseille via Toulouse, taking around seven hours.
