Rambouillet is a commune and a sous-préfecture of the Yvelines department, situated 27 miles from downtown Paris. Easily reached by road from the capital, it's a destination best known perhaps for the Forêt de Rambouillet a vast, 30,000-hectare large forest that has been popular with hunters for many generations. It is also home to some interesting architectural treasures.

The Château de Rambouillet is the most famous building in the city, famous not only for its aesthetic and historical value but also for having hosted a number of international summits and for being the summer residence of the French president. The chateau in its earliest incarnation was built in 1368 and then added to and altered considerably during the 18th century. A variety of other medieval buildings, which are the property of French politicians, can also be seen around the city.

The Rambouillet forest is the city's greatest attraction as far as lovers of the Great Outdoors are concerned. The eco-system of this vast nature reserve supports all manner of wildlife, including wild boars, deer and roe deer. The presence of game animals makes this one of France's most popular hunting destinations, with visitors coming from far and wide to enjoy the big game action. The forest also offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, horseback riding and a variety of other outdoor pursuits.

Rambouillet is reached easily from Paris by taking a train from Gare Montparnasse; the journey time is approximately 45 minutes. Alternatively you could hire a car for extra comfort and convenience and still be there in under an hour.
