Explore Pau

Pau has some fascinating renaissance architecture such as the Château de Pau (pictured), which dates from the 12th century. Inside you’ll find a splendid collection of Flemish and Gobelin tapestries. The Tour de Gaston Phoebus, known as the rectangular tower, dates back to the 14th century.

Walking through town, you will see the Musée des Beaux-Arts,  which has an edifying collection of European paintings. If you’re looking for bargains, try shopping on place du Forail, behind the château; here you'll find genuine 18th and 19th century antiques.

Dining in Pau can be expensive, but there are some fairly cheap restaurants and cafes. Au Fin Gourmet, on the southern periphery of Pau near the railway station has reasonable priced dishes. Transport

Uzein Airport is located approximately 12kms north of Pau. If you decide to book car hire from the airport, you will need to take the N117 road, which is directly accessible from Toulouse. If you are travelling from Paris, travel south along the A10 and you will reach Vierzon, here take the N20 south towards Limoges, continuing on N21 south towards Tarbes, then turn west along the N117 to Pau.

Within Pau itself are public buses trains and taxis. Trains operate from Pau to Paris, Bordeaux, Bayonne and several other French cities. Buses are cheap and will get you around Pau safely and efficiently, however if you would like to travel to the outskirts and surrounding countryside, car hire is the most suitable option.
