Once the capital of Rome's first colony in Gaul, and an historically important city throughout the middle ages, Narbonne is a pleasant town known for its tranquil atmosphere, magnificent cathedral and proximity to some of the best scenery of southern France. This is a great place to explore by car, with beautifully, quiet winding roads through stunning scenic countryside.

The old town is dominated by the towering Cathedral and boasts numerous other examples of noteworthy architecture, including the Eglises Notre-Dame de la Mourguié, and Chapelle des Pénitents Bleus. The Rue du Pont des Marchands is lined with numerous old mansions and buildings, as well as quaint cafes. Nearby are the acclaimed museums of Musée Archéologique, d'Art et d'Histoire and Lapidiary Museum.

For relaxation and exercise, stroll along the grassy esplanade on the banks of the Canal de la Robine, or explore the narrow lanes and alleys of the old town and discover elements of a real, traditional French town.

The surrounding area is an exciting and varied landscape. Travel from the mouth of the Aude to Perpignan then inland to Béziers, with its imposing cathedral set high above the Orb River, and the spectacular Renaissance town of Pézenas. To the south is the ancient pre-Roman settlement of the Enseurune. It is also possible to head to the spectacular uplands of the Monts de l'Espinouse and the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Languedoc, a ramblers' paradise. Alternatively, follow the Aude to the famous Cathar fortress-town of Carcassonne.
