Briancon Station Guide

Guide

Briancon is a town in the department of Upper Alps in southeast France, close to the border with Italy. Built on a plateau that dominates the convergence of the Durance River with the Guisane, this is the second-highest city on the continent, with an altitude of 4,429 feet (1,350 metres). Its historical centre is a fortified town featuring very steep and narrow alleyways and overlooked by Fort Janus 4,000 feet above the town.

Briancon Rail Station is just 500 metres from the nearest bottom ski lifts. It offers passenger amenities such as ATMs, refreshment stands and newsagents. Car hire services are also on hand at Briancon Rail Station, and vehicles can be booked online in advance.

Visitors from the UK can reach Briancon by Eurostar from London Waterloo to Paris, from where they can continue their journey on a high-speed TGV train to Valence, and then a regular train to Briancon Rail Station. The most comfortable option is to use the overnight sleeper from Paris Austerlitz, with first and second-class carriages available.

Alternatively, you can take the TGV from Paris via Lyon to Grenoble, from where you can get to Briancon by bus. A further possibility is to catch the TGV from Paris to Turin via Oulx in Italy; this service runs twice daily and takes only 4 hours, 30 minutes to Oulx, with a linking bus to Briancon. There are also three trains per day from Marseille to Brianon.
