Bellegarde sur Valserine is a commune in the department of Ain, France, not far from Lyon. Situated on the convergence of the Valserine and Rhine rivers in the lovely Valserine valley, this small town is on the rail line from Paris Gare de Lyon to Evian. It was in the 1980s that the TGV high-speed train reached Bellegarde, which is now just three hours away from Paris and is a significant station on the Paris-Geneva route.
Bellegarde Rail Station is located near to the city centre and provides amenities for passengers such as ATMs, telephones, lavatories, newsagents and refreshment stands. Cheap car hire services are also available, and vehicles can be easily booked online in advance.
Another railway line, the Haut-Bugey line, links Bellegarde sur Valserine to Bourg en Bresse through the Jura massif. The entire 40 mile (65km) line is currently closed for reconstruction and electrification. Upon completion in June 2009, this route will be an important connection between the TGV network and Geneva, and the travel time from Paris to Geneva will be shortened by 20 minutes to around three hours.
Bellegarde's highlight is its imposing town hall, with a facade carved from stone and some beautiful pieces of artworks and furniture on display. It is worthwhile to explore Bellegarde's surroundings by rental car, particularly the Alyscamps in Arles, a large Roman necropolis, and the Arenes de Nimes, the world's best preserved Roman amphitheatre.
We offer budget car hire at Bellegarde Rail Station, but recommend you book online in advance to take advantage of the most economical deals on the market.
