Bayonne Station Guide

Guide

Bayonne is a city and commune in southwestern France at the junction of the Adour and Nive rivers, in the Pyrnes-Atlantiques department. It forms an urban area together with neighbouring towns Biarritz, Anglet and Saint Jean de Luz.

Bayonne is on the high-speed TGV line connecting Paris and Hendaye and with links to Spain. The line slows significantly beyond Bordeaux, but plans have been made to upgrade the service. Regional rail services exist along the Basque coast to Dax and Bordeaux, and to Pau. Another line along the Nive valley traverses Labourd and Nafarroa Beherea to Saint Jean Pied de Port and is primarily used by hikers and tourists.

In Bayonne, visitors can tour several historic landmarks, from Roman town fortifications and the marvellous 14th century, gothic Cathedral Sainte Marie sited in the city centre to the forts and ramparts built by Vauban under Louis XIV. Among other things, Bayonne is renowned for its superb Bonnat Museum of Art, its chocolate, the invention of the bayonet and the Ftes de Bayonne (summer festival). In fact, there is so much to discover that it is well worth staying here for a few days.

Placed within proximity to the city centre, the imposing Bayonne Railway Station contains adequate passenger amenities including toilets, ATMs, refreshment stands and newsagents. Hire car facilities are represented and vehicles can be reserved online in advance. We offer low-cost car rental in Bayonne, with driving being the most convenient way to get around the city.
