Sharm el Sheik has become Egypt’s premier tourist and resort area. With magnificent diving, hotels, resorts, beaches, desert trekking and restaurants, this area is the perfect place for a relaxing or active holiday.
The Ras Muhammad Natural Park, at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, was established in 1983 to protect the coral reefs and the area’s fragile environment. This park contains one of the world’s most famous dive sites. The colors and life in this amazing coral reef will stun scuba divers as well as casual snorkellers.
There is plenty to do in Sharm el Sheikh. Though the main activities are water sports and diving, the terrific interior of the Sinai desert offers exciting activities such as renting quad bikes and motorbikes, or partaking in a guided excursion into the desert. Another exciting adventure is a ride out into the desert on camel or horseback or exploring the Sinai by jeep. For a touch of the bizarre, there is a limestone boulder two kilometers north of the edge of downtown that is shaped through erosion into the vague portrait of J. F. Kennedy.
For other fun activities try the Fun Town amusement park which features the Bowling Center and an ice skating rink. Or stop in one of the city’s exciting gambling casinos and try your hand with lady luck.
For an adventure of Biblical proportions, take a trip through the desert to Mt. Sinai. You can climb to the top of the mountain (3 hours) and see the place Christians, Jews and Muslims believe God gave Moses the original tablets containing the 10 Commandments. It is possible to join a tour group going here and even to camp on the mountain!
Also popular is the bohemian town of Dahab, further north on the Gulf of Aqaba. This delightful, former Bedouin fishing village, attracts a more laid back, backpacker crowd, but has a wonderful atmosphere and setting, as well as good diving.
Flights are available to and from Sharm el Sheik from many cities in Europe and the Middle East. There are also daily flights to and from Cairo.
