It would be a huge mistake for any visitor to Australia to pass up the chance to see the Great Barrier Reef. Bundaberg, known as the reef's Southern Gateway, may be the best base to explore this natural wonder. Qantas frequently flies from Brisbane to Bundaberg Airport and from here, it's an easy drive to the city centre. Car hire in Bundaberg Airport is recommended, not only because public transport is limited but because of the great scenery provided by the beautiful Australian coast and nearby destinations such as Bargara and Mon Repos.

Who to Book With
Visitors will easily find the car rental desks in the small terminal of Bundaberg Airport. The car rental companies represented here are Avis, Hertz, Budget and Thrifty. Europcar has a desk at the airport car park.

Need to Know Essentials
You will need to show the following documents at vehicle collection:

- National driver's licence (must have been held for at least one year)
- Proof of identity
- Credit card (with credit to cover the total cost plus the cost of incidental charges)

Driving
The speed limits in Australia are 31mph to 35mph for residential or built-up areas and 62mph to 68mph for rural roads and highways. Seatbelts must be used by all persons within a moving vehicle. Check if the car you are driving has a e-Tag or e-Way pass which allow passage at toll gates on motorways. Otherwise, prepare loose change to pass through such toll gates smoothly. Take note of parking signs which indicate parking restrictions. A 1/2P sign, for example, indicates that vehicles can be parked for no more than 30 minutes.

Transport

While transport between Bundaberg Airport and the city centre may be limited to taxis and shuttle buses, Bundaberg is only three miles from the city. When driving from the airport to the city, simply exit Airport Drive and turn right onto Bundaberg Childers Road (Taklavan Street), which leads all the way to the city centre.

Taxis are available at the airport. The queue for taxis is found right outside the terminal.

Buses
Bundaberg and Wide Bay Shuttle Service buses are available at Bundaberg Airport. They transport travellers between the airport and Bundaberg city, as well as to several destinations on the Coral Coast. A single-journey fare from the airport to Bundaberg city centre is £8.

Facilities

Terminals
Bundaberg Airport, which is operated and owned by the Bundaberg Regional Council, has a small, easy-to-navigate terminal. The airport received more than 130,000 passengers in 2010. Regular commercial flights from Brisbane via QantasLink and from Lady Elliot Island via Seair Pacific land at the airport. A number of charter operators also operate flights here. There are around 27 services per week.

Parking
The car park is located right in front of the terminal and is easily reached on foot. Cars parked for two hours or less do not need to pay any parking fees. Additional hours of parking cost just £1.30 per hour. Visitors can pay via cash or credit card (MasterCard or Visa only) at any of the two payment machines found in the Baggage Claim area.

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi services are not available at the airport.

Restaurants and Bars
Food choices at the airport are limited to snacks and refreshments which are sold at the airport kiosk and the café, both of which are located within the terminal building.

VIP Lounges
There are no VIP lounges at Bundaberg Airport.

Shopping is limited to small items sold at a kiosk within the airport terminal.
