The city of Kahramanmaras, originally referred to as Maraj or Markasi many decades ago, has a long history marked by invasions. It lies 568 meters above sea level and is considered as the 11th largest city in Turkey today. The city was renowned for its participation in the War of Independence which earned it the name Kahraman, meaning 'hero'. Kahramanmaras is a great destination for history buffs and sightseers

The city is even more famous due to its culinary specialty - the Maras ice cream which is available in specialist ice cream shops throughout Turkey and the rest of the world. The ice cream is made up of goats milk and the roots of wild orchid flowers, which can be harvested from many of the mountains of the surrounding lands. It has an elastic consistency, just like bubble gum, the difference is that it melts in your mouth as you chew.

You can also buy carved wooden furniture in Kahramanmaras, as well as copper and brass works and glided silver thread. The city is also known for its Maras peppers which contains no aflatoxin and has a wonderful aroma, high vitamin C content and are moderately hot. In addition to peppers, the city also produces cotton and potatoes and woven cotton textiles. Make sure to check out the Great Mosque Museum which was built in 1502.

Travelling around Kahramanmaras is pretty easy with its public transportation. Most Turks travel using the modern and luxurious buses traversing the road between different cities and towns daily. Departures are frequent so you won't need to book ahead. If you plan on travelling further afield, it is best to rent a car.
