Midrand is essentially a collection of suburbs in Johannesburg. It was an actual municipality until 1998 when its status changed and it technically ceased to exist. Today, the name still applies to suburbs found north of the Juskei River huddling along the N1 highway. The most notable communities in this area include Halfway Gardens, Glen Austin, Crowthorne and Halfway House.

In Midrand, the N1 motorway is referred to as the Ben Shoeman Highway', a title it retains as it travels past Centurion to the north. There are several avenues leading south into Johannesburg including the N1 (which skirts the city to the west); the M1 (which travels into the heart of the city); and the N3 (the Eastern Bypass Road).

With cheap car hire in Midrand you can easily connect to Lanseria Airport, a secondary facility in Johannesburg where most of the regularly scheduled traffic is bound for Cape Town. Otherwise, Lanseria Airport is used for charter and diplomatic flights. To get to Lanseria Airport, follow the N14 west from Centurion. Total driving time is a little over 30 minutes.

The bulk of the region's domestic and international traffic is routed through Johannesburg International Airport, which can be reached even faster by car hire in Midrand despite the fact that it is located further away. The fastest avenue is the Eastern Bypass, which can get drives to the airport in less than 30 minutes when traffic is light.

With car rental in Midrand visitors have the most mobility, with the option of visiting sites in the city or heading out to wildlife reserves in the countryside. The most popular attraction to visit by car is Kruger National Park.
