Sainte Marie Guide

Set just east of St Denis on Reunion's northern coast, the charming village of Sainte Marie combines stunning sea views and rolling green countryside to offer visitors the best of both worlds.

While the area is growing as a centre for agro-tourism, it is popular with those who love the sea. Photographers, bird watchers and amateur fishermen frequent Sainte Marie.

Downtown in the town are a small number of shops as well as a port. Many of the area's best shopping is found in nearby St. Denis. St Denis makes an ideal spot to visit day or night. In the evenings, its bars and restaurants come to life, as do the city's streets.

When travelling between locations on the island, using a car hire service will save you time and money over costly taxis and excruciatingly slow buses. In Sainte Marie downtown, you can arrange your car hire service in a matter of minutes, from: Gillot La Ferme, Sainte Marie, 97438, RE.

In your car hire vehicle, you can explore the town's rich heritage and culture. In Sainte Marie downtown, you can visit an 18th century windmill, a Jesuit cemetery and the Cellars of Desbassyns. The town also hosts several religious buildings including a mosque, temples and the 18th century Church of the Black Virgin.

Venturing west from Sainte Marie will lead you to the city of St Denis as well as the village of St. Paul. The latter makes a perfect destination for those who love sports and activities. In St Paul you can go horse back riding, play tennis or enjoy a round of golf.

In your car hire, you can explore the volcanic peaks of Reunion and their dramatic landscapes by taking Route de la Montagne (the Mountain Road) which leads to the interior of the island.
