Le port Guide

Located in the north-west corner of the French overseas island of Reunion, Le Port is a major town and, unsurprisingly, a port. The port can dock large vessels from its location in the western Indian Ocean since being artificially excavated during the 1880s, when facilities in the capital district of Saint-Denis proved to be insufficient.

The right-angled shaped port is one of the few tourist attractions in the town, but there are good opportunities here for those who are interested in sailing and fishing. If you want to explore the island further however, the city has been linked to most points by an easily navigated paved road since the railway closed in 1962. The best thing to do is to pick up some car hire at Le Port.

If you take your cheap car hire at Le Port to the north of Saint-Denis, you will find the capital city of Le Chaudron. The city is mostly know for its violent riots over mass unemployment in the 1990s, and although unemployment is still high in the area, Chaudron is becoming a popular place to visit.

Some of the city's more positive achievements include the AS Chaudron football club, who you can watch play at the local stadium, and Kom Zot, famous in the reggae scene. Chaudron is probably the most built-up part of the island, but also the best spot for those seeking a good choice of restaurants and nightlife.
