Kagamuga Airport Guide

Kagamuga airport, near Mount Hagen, was officially opened in 1965 by Earl Mountbatten of Burma. Sometimes referred to as Mount Hagen airport, it is currently served by two airlines. Air Niugini offers direct flights to Port Moreseby, while Airlines PNG flies to Kikori, Kiunga, Lae, Moro, Port Moresby and Tabubil.

This small, domestic airport is located approximately 20 km east of Mount Hagen City which is the capital of the Western Highlands Province. The terminal has a range of facilities available including a snack bar, gift shop and car hire.

Arranging your car hire is an easy process. Your booking agent will require documentation including: a credit card, passport and driving licence. If your licence is from the UK, you will need to show both your photo card and paper counterpart.

With clearly marked roads and well-paved main routes, driving within the Western Highlands Province is easy. The airport is closely situated to the Highlands Highway which provides access to many parts of Papua New Guinea. You will be able to drive through many provinces using this route including: Morobe, Madang, Simbu Province, the East Highlands Province, Enga and Southern Islands Province.

At many points along the route, the highway climbs through this mountainous landscape and offers quite stunning views. In the province of Simbu, the Daulo Pass (8130 ft) offers some of the most spectacular to be found.

Mount Hagen City is less than 20 minutes' drive in your car hire. The Western Highlands Cultural Centre can be found within the city and it provides a glimpse into the area's ancient traditions and ways. A lively Saturday market held in the city offers handcrafts, including traditional string bilums. When exploring the area, visiting Mount Hagen itself is a must. This extinct volcano is located 24km northwest of the city.
