Kokopo Guide

Kokopo is the capital of the East New Britain province of Papua New Guinea. It replaced nearby Rabaul as the area's administrative seat in 1994 after its volcanoes (Tavervur and Vulcan) erupted.

In Kokopo, downtown can be found on Main Road. A number of shops, restaurants and services can be found here, including a car hire service. Car hire is strongly recommended for those travelling independently in Papua New Guinea as it provides the mobility that such a remote location requires.

Those with an interest in modern history will enjoy touring some of the areas WWII sites in their car hire. During the war, Kokopo and neighbouring town Rabaul, played a pivotal role as it was home to Japanese troops and Allied P.O.W.s. In Kokopo downtown, you can visit the war museum which has an extensive collection of vehicles, arms and artefacts.

A short drive in your car hire will lead you to the village of Karavia, where five Japanese barges can be viewed. This waterway was dug out of hill by POWs. Malmaluan Village is home to Vuruga Road, which was formerly the Burma Road. While it offers stunning views, you can visit a B-17 wreck there as well as an underground bunker.

Those preferring to check out the bunkers on a golf course can head to Ralum Golf Course in Kokopo which overlooks Simpson Harbour. The course is adjacent to the ruins of Queen Emma's Kokopo home, Gunatambu Mansion.
