Auckland: Pakuranga Guide

Pakuranga is one of the suburbs of a city called Manukau City in the Auckland region of New Zealand. This suburb is located in the northeast section of Manukau City and has a small population of almost 9,000 residents. Pakuranga is situated on a peninsula and is connected to Panmure by a bridge. The original bridge dates back to 1866. During the 1950s, the structure was rebuilt to make it sturdier. This allowed the passing of vehicles across the Tamaki River, which is west and north of Pakuranga. The suburb has beautiful scenery with much of the countryside being undeveloped. It has some industry in the town center, but most business is conducted in Manukau City.

Pakuranga, despite its small size, has a shopping mall and an art gallery. Within the suburb is the well-known private school, Saint Kentigern College. The college is co-educational and was established in 1953. It has a partner school by the same name located in Remuera. It is a secondary school, educating children from years seven to thirteen. The younger students, up to year ten, are taught in single-sex classes. It becomes co-educational for students over the age of eleven. This private institution is known throughout New Zealand for academic excellence.

Pakuranga has managed to avoid large developments. This allows the original architecture to remain standing. Much of this suburb is made up of American style homes from the 1950s and 1960s. The suburb has a high amount of traffic because it is the main passage from other suburbs to the center of Auckland. The roads that were built to accommodate vehicles have taken away from this areas country charm. However, there are still areas along the coast that are untouched. The land was once used for farming, which was the main industry in Pakuranga.
