Venice Airport Guide

Venice Airport

Venice Airport is dedicated to famous local son Marco Polo and is on the mainland facing across to the City of Canals. Hotel accommodation can be hard to find in Venice and getting a motorhome rental after you land is an economical and convenient alternative. Visitors hiring one of these all-purpose vehicles have the option of staying at campsites near the sands of Jesolo Lido or in the environs of Mestre and Treviso.

Transport options in Venice are much the same as they have been for centuries and are limited to walking or riding one of the ubiquitous gondolas. World-famous attractions including St Mark's Piazza and Rialto Bridge can only be reached by leaving your vehicle at the camping site. With the freedom of a campervan it is a simple task to enjoy the delights of Padua, Delta del Po Nature Reserve and Adriatic beaches such as those around Chioggia Beach.

Attractions

St Mark's Square is considered the heart and soul of Venice. The piazza is ringed by notable buildings that include the fairy-tale like St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace and the 15th century Clock Tower. The palace's staterooms, fabulous art and sculptures and Bridge of Sighs contribute to its magnetism.

San Giovanni e Paolo Basilica is an enormous Gothic structure featuring lots of old religious paintings and murals. Casa di Carlo Goldoni is another exceptional museum themed on the life of the playwright. La Fenice offers operatic and musical concerts, while the former San Vidal Church now stages concerts of music written by Venetian composer Vivaldi.

Enjoying a gourmet coffee at St Mark's Square cafe-bars and a meal with the famed Rialto Bridge as backdrop are essential Venice activities. Taking a gondola ride offers different aspects of the city's ancient structures. Vaporetto water-taxis link Venice to the islands of Murano and Burano where colourful houses and a glass museum are among draws.

Camping

Camping Albatros is located close to the golden sands of Jesolo Lido and is perfect for those who want a motorhome site that mixes beach and culture.

Camping Marina Di Venezia is set in a pine-shaded grassy location beside Jesolo Lido. Great services and amenities such as a newsstand, supermarket, restaurants, cash machines and bicycle hire ensure holidaymakers' every whim is satisfied.

Camping Village Jolly is just five minutes from Via Liberta, the main road-bridge to Venice. This spacious complex features the Hello Bella Bar & Restaurant, a shop stocked with diverse foodstuffs and sundry items, and swimming pools.

Driving

Piazzale Roma is a square at the island end of Via Liberta. There are a number of car parks around the square where drivers can leave their vans before walking to the historic centre. The mainland from Mestre onwards has good roads with plentiful signposts. The only hazard is the occasional Italian motorist with a death-wish. The permitted blood-alcohol limit when driving is 0.05. per cent Drivers need to keep to the right side of the road in Italy.
