Guide to Munich

Munich

The Alps and unique locations such as the former Nazi concentration camp at Dachau, the Bavarian Film Studio and Neuschwanstein Castle are all conveniently accessed with your own self-drive vehicle. You can stay at regional campgrounds if you have a motorhome. Munich's two-week-long Oktoberfest is a major draw and the city is crowded with tourists.

Attractions

All sightseeing tours of Munich should begin at the Marienplatz. The Glockenspiel sits atop the town hall and this fairy-tale like structure dominates one side of this iconic public square. There are lots of chic retail outlets and wining and dining establishments in the pedestrian area between the square and Karlsplatz.

The Bavaria State Museum and the Hofbrauhaus are two of the more popular sites within five minutes' walk of Marienplatz. East of the Old City, on a River Isar island, the 30,000 scientific items and relics housed in the Deutsches Museum can easily keep you occupied for a day.

The BMW World Museum is across from Olympiapark and showcases a collection of vehicles that trace the technological development of the company since its inception. Olympiapark was built for the 1972 Olympics. The park surrounding the main stadium is a bucolic location.

Camping

Campingplace Obermenzing is eight kilometres from central Munich. It is a large campsite set amid trees with basic facilities including spotlessly clean shower blocks and washing machines. There are a number of cafe's and small lakes in the locality.

Camping Ampersee is close to the A8 Munich to Stuttgart motorway. It enjoys a lakeside setting and private beach. Guests can swim or windsurf on the lake. A restaurant with waterside terrace and sales of necessities in the reception are other onsite benefits.

Campingplatz Langwieder See lies near a lake to the northwest of Munich and has a pebble beach. Onsite amenities include a limited-service restaurant, bakery service and a playground.

Driving

The motorway network radiating out from Munich is comprehensive and an abundance of signposts ensure drivers do not usually get lost. It is best to keep plenty of petrol in the tank when heading out into the countryside. Country roads and motorways are not too busy, unlike city roads. The blood alcohol limit for driving is 0.05 per cent. Germany drives on the right side of the road.
