Guide to Nice

Nice

Boasting a fabulous climate and a soft sandy beach, Nice has long been a destination of choice for European holidaymakers. It offers visitors a world-class selection of dining, nightlife and cultural venues. It is also in a prime location for trips with a rental motorhome or car along the French Riviera.

Camp sites spread out along the Mediterranean shoreline make great bases for exploring such exotic locations as St Tropez and Monaco or even crossing the Italian border at Ventimiglia. Other seaside resorts including Antibes and Cap d'Ail are easily reached. Roads inland to the region surrounding the Verdon Gorge meander through pastoral vistas.

Attractions

Promenade des Anglais is Nice's most famous landmark and a stroll along it in the evening is an essential visitor activity. It gives direct access to the beach and the balmy waters of the Baie des Anges. Castel Hill is a park above the town which offers panoramic views over the bay.

The relics and fossils unearthed from the prehistoric Terra Amata archaeological dig in Nice are on display in a museum on site. Famous European painters have been regular Nice visitors and examples of their works are contained in museums here. The Nice Fine Arts Museum and the Matisse Museums are two of the establishments.

Cannes is only 30 minutes in light traffic. Boats run out to St Marguerite Island. The Man in the Iron Mask was incarcerated in the fort on the island for 11 years. Castellane is 100kms from Nice and noted for Our Lady of the Rock Chapel and other historic buildings. It is at one end of a picturesque sector of the Verdon Gorge. From the town, it is possible to drive parallel with the gorge.

Camping in Nice

Camping La Vieille Ferme is a few kilometres from Nice and in a pleasant location. A nearby train station provides a convenient means of getting into town for those who don't want to drive their motorhomes in. A large swimming pool with kiddies' pool, a snack-bar and a bakery are the onsite amenities.

Domaine de la Bergerie is in a forest setting close to the 12th century village of Vence. It offers campers full facilities which include a restaurant, a bar, take-away food service, a shop and washing machines.

Les Cigales is one kilometre from Cannes beach and features tree-shaded pitches. A tropical waterpark with separate children's pool, a solarium, and different play areas make this campground a good option for those with youngsters.

Driving in Nice

At the height of summer, traffic in Nice can get congested and it is better to leave your motorhome at the camp site and travel in on public transport. Travelling elsewhere presents few problems. The A8 autoroute runs inland parallel to the Mediterranean and provides an easy access route to destinations on the Riviera. Motorists drive on the right in France. The legal limit for drink driving is 0.05 per cent.
