Guide to Perth

Perth

Western Australia is the largest state in Australia, spanning an area of almost half the country. Though flying is the preferred mode of transport when getting from town to town, driving by self-contained van provides more opportunity to experience the unsurpassed beauty of this raw yet irresistible part of the world. Perth, the capital and largest city of the state, is also the main gateway to Australia's stunning southwest. From this city, tourists can drive to some of the most enchanting seaside resorts like Yallingup and Dunsborough, discover temperate forests, or enjoy magnificent natural lookouts.

Perth itself is also a fascinating destination. Even though it doesn't have the vibrancy of Sydney, or the cultural-identity of Melbourne, this laid-back and peaceful city sports some tremendous landmarks. Kings Park is usually at the top of any traveller's sightseeing list, and the city zoo always offers a great day out for families. To the west, along the beautiful coastline, a great beach culture can be visited, while to the east, national parks, wineries and the Upper Swan River greet tourists.

Attractions

In the centre of the city, Perth boasts the pedestrian shopping strips of Hay and Murray streets, which also contain plenty of pubs, restaurants and entertainment arcades for guests. If the city becomes a little too hectic, then take a time out in Kings Park, one of the largest inner-city green spaces in the world. Just across the river, in the southern suburbs of Perth, stands the Perth City Zoo. One of its greatest features is the kangaroo paddock, allowing visitors to walk with and feed them.

Of course, one of the highlights of this city is the Swan River, which meanders through Perth in a southwest direction. This is one of the cleanest and most scenic rivers in Australia, and can be toured by various boat cruises. Alternatively, taking a biking tour along the banks is highly recommended, especially on one of Perth's sunny spring days.

Italy's remarkably easy to get out of Perth when travelling via campervan. Follow the Swan River upstream for about 40kms to reach the Walyunga National Park and Avon Valley National Park. Fantastic bushwalking and nature watching opportunities are available inside these parks, along with camping facilities, so guests can stay the night at a minimal charge.

Camping in Perth

Coogee Beach Holiday Park rests upon the relaxing shores of Coogee Beach, which is just off t Cockburn Sound. Italy'ss 15 minutes from Fremantle and downtown Perth.

The closest camping site to downtown Perth is Central Caravan Park. This is an ideal place for staying in the city or getting out and about.

Discovery Holiday Park- Perth is only a short distance from several national parks, just to the east of the holiday park. Downtown Perth is not too far from this camp site also.

Drive in Western Austrailia

Despite WA's sheer size, there aren't too many main highways spanning the state. When exploring, always prepare emergency supplies of water, food and fuel. Keep to the left side of the road, unless overtaking. Don't drink and drive, as the police strongly enforce this rule with heavy fines. Though sealed tracks are easy to navigate, unsealed roads can be much tougher.

  • Speed limits in the city: 50kph.
  • Speed limits on national roads: 100-110kph.
