Beautifully nestled along the northern New South Wales coast, Ballina is one of the most laid-back, friendly and attractive beach towns in Australia. Naturally, the most appealing feature in the town is its beaches, which are laced with golden sand and fabulous surf year-round. If tourists have access to a campervan, then getting from beach to beach becomes extremely simple. However, the excitement doesn't end there. Nearby coastal destinations like Lennox Head and Byron Bay are also just a short outing away. Ballina is the perfect spot to uncover the picturesque coastal scenery of the New South Wales' Northern Rivers region.

Attractions

Ballina has three main beaches, not too far from one another, each with its own charisma. Shelley Beach is one of the most popular places to take a dip. It boasts a surf life saving club and is fully patrolled by local life-savers, so this is the best place to take the family for a swim. For a more subdued beach experience, Angels Beach is about as quiet as it gets. There is usually no life-guard on duty here, so swim with caution.

Lighthouse Beach, which is another of Ballin's superb patrolled beaches, is an ideal place to surf, swim or simply sunbake. Above the beach, visitors can explore the town's lighthouse, which has been an iconic symbol for the area for over a century. It was first erected in 1879, and began protecting ships from the rocky coastline in 1880. Spectacular sweeping views of the rolling surf can be experienced from the lighthouse too.

Only 10kms from Ballina is the superb beachside town of Lennox Head. Even though surfing and sunbathing are the highlights here, Lennox Head Heath is the ideal spot for outdoor-enthusiasts. Bird watching is particularly popular on the heath, with beautiful species frequenting the area throughout the year, especially in the spring. This site rests just behind Lake Ainsworth, a tea-coloured natural reservoir fit for various water activities.

Camping in Ballina

Ballina Headlands Leisure Park is one of the best camping sites in the town. It contains pools, a spa, playground and great views nearby.

Ballina Lakeside Holiday Park is home to some outstanding facilities, including a gym, fantastic pool, mini-golf course, wireless internet access and a plethora of activities for the kids. This is a true family-holiday park.

South Ballina Beach Holiday Park is one of the only pet-friendly camp grounds in Ballina. It is a great place for the family, as two pools, comfortable showers, bathrooms, barbecues and a wonderful kiosk are found on site.

Driving in Ballina

There is a plethora of large and safe highways spanning New South Wales, making it easy to navigate the state. The M1, the main highway travelling down Australia's eastern coastline, connects Ballina with other nearby coastal towns, such as Byron Bay and Coffs Harbour. Speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not tolerated. Many speed traps are constantly found along the M1, and fines are generally heavy.
