Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi. It is in the central region of the country and has a population of almost 600,000 people. It lies on the Lilongwe River that borders Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia. It is also located on the M1, Malawi's main north south highway.

The city began as a small village on the banks of the river, but became a British colonial administrative center during the first years of the twentieth century. Though the official capital city is Lilongwe, the country's economic capital still lies in Blantyre.

Lilongwe is known as a safe and quiet African capital. Street crime is very uncommon in the city.
