Nazareth, the largest city in the arid, desert lands of Israel is equally divided between Arab Muslims and Christians. This city in the heart of the Jewish State befits its importance as one of the most important Christian holy sites in the world. Much of Jesus Christ’s adult life was spent in and around Nazareth and the city has largely escaped Israel’s violence.
The Basilica of the Annunciation is an imposing two-story church, marking the traditional site of the roman catholics. The interior enshrines the Grotto of the Annunciation, the supposed remains of Mary's home.
The city contains numerous sites of interest including the Church of St. Joseph’s Carpentry, near the Basilica of the Annunciation, which marks the traditional site of the workshop of Joseph. Also nearby is the Sisters of the Nazareth Convent, which contains excavations of the 1st Century Tomb of Herod.
Though most people come to Nazareth for its religious significance, this is also a modern Arab city with other attractions. If you get the chance, go to the traditional Old Market in the city center and try your hand at bargaining for local goods. The city also contains many decent hotels and restaurants.
Because Israel is such a small country, there are many other places nearby that are easily accessible by car. These include Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and of course Israel’s laid back Mediterranean beaches.
The airport in Tel Aviv offers daily flights to many cities in Europe and other countries. Jerusalem, which is nearer, also receives numerous international flights. To get to Nazareth you can rent a car or hire a taxi to drive you from the airport. Prebook car hire in advance with us and you'll be eligible to our optional extras including GPS, child's booster seats and baby chairs.
Buses operate throughout Nazareth, so if car hire is not your first choice of transport we highly advise you use the buses as a safe option.
