Located on the east coast of the Canadian province of New Brunswick, Moncton is rich in agricultural, railway and industrial heritage, and is well known for its mysterious Magnetic Hill. Parks are abundant in and around the town and are especially geared towards winter activities.
Moncton’s number one attraction is the quirky Magnetic Hill, just out of town. Visitors pay a $2 toll at the gatehouse and drive around a comically twisting road before parking at the bottom of the hill. The slope is actually on the side of a far larger hill, creating this illusion. Additionally, the excellent entertainment complexes nearby will keep the kids happy.
Of the town’s many parks, Centennial Park, with its lake and pleasant beach area, is the best. The park has extensive woods with trails for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. For the culture conscious, the Acadian Museum displays interesting artefacts on Acadian culture from 1604. Alternatively, the nearby Capitol Theatre has been restored to its original 1922 elegance and is worth seeing.
There is a fantastic indoor amusement park in Crystal Palace including shooting arcades, a four-screen cinema, an array of games, a little rollercoaster and many other leisure activities to entertain the whole family.
If you have a car, head north out to the artfully designed Kouchibouguac National Park, which is a wonderful destination for relaxing biking, hiking and beach-going. The varied ecosystems here are spectacular. Before you get to the park, you can stop off at La Dune de Bouctouche, a sand dune that stretches for an impressive 12kms.
Moncton is centered between several major roads passing through New Brunswick, including route 15 and route 2 (Trans-Canada Highway). VIA Rail's train from Montréal to Halifax stops in Moncton six days a week.
If you’re travelling by air, Moncton International Airport is about 10 minutes to the east of Moncton's city center, along Route 132. Car hire is available here but is very expensive compared to online prices. Let us compare car hire prices from over forty leading, well used suppliers, to find you the best deal, and save you waiting for hours at the airport on arrival.
Buses also operate throughout Moncton and to and from the airport. Prices are cheap but car hire is far more reliable and a better way of getting around Moncton and seeing the sights.
