The city of Plovdiv, is the 2nd largest city in Bulgaria after Sofia, but from the northern region perspective, it is the largest and considered to be the most important city. Approximately 340,000 people live in Plovdiv, and is said to be one of the oldest cities in Europe. Armies from the cities of Troy, Mycenae, Rome, Carthage and Constantinople were said to once rule the city of Plovdiv so there is a lot of historic landmarks here. Explore Plovdiv

Following the Balkan War and World War I, Plovdiv became one of the places where thousands of war refugees go to and many of them, since then, have settled here. The most known tourist objects in Plovdiv are the Roman Amphitheatre, Roman Stadium and Roman Aqueduct that were the remains of the great Roman Empire when they once ruled here.

Be sure to visit the Bachkovo Monastery around 30kms south of Plovdiv, and whilst down this way take a look at the Asen's Fortress, with beautiful views. Nebet Tepe, also referred to as one of the seven hills in Plovdiv, offers tourists fantastic views of the Rhodope mountains. There is also an ancient 12th century fortress and its walls on top of the hill.

Transport

Buses, taxis, trains, and trolleybuses all operate throughout Plovdiv and its neighbouring towns and cities. It is a major international transport hub with Plovdiv International Airport located only 20kms south of Plovdiv city. If this is your arrival point then be sure to book car hire online in advance, so your vehicle will be ready for collection on your arrival.

Getting around the city is possible on foot but if you are the exploring kind then opt for car hire as your choice of transport. Not all public services will get you to the more secluded, rural areas surrounding Plovdiv.
