Manama Airport got its beginnings from a single humble flight from London to Delhi. Situated 7 kilometers from the center of Bahrain's capital, Manama, the airport was the first truly international airports in the Gulf area. The first international flights occurred once weekly, from London to Delhi.

The airport has come a long way in the decades since its opening. The airport has recently had its runways resurfaced, and has a three-star rating from Skytrax, meaning that it has excellent services. The airport has come into the 21st century, adding state-of-the-art security and traffic handling systems, and new parking bays able to accommodate the largest passenger and cargo aircraft in use today.

The main runway is nearly 4 kilometers long, made of asphalt, and can accommodate even the new Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft in use as long-range passenger craft. The second runway, which parallels the first, is 2 and a half kilometers long, and used primarily as a taxiway. There are more than 30 major airlines that operate into and out of Bahrain International, including Lufthansa, British Airways, KLM, and Emirates. Flights from America are typically linked through Paris, London, or Berlin, allowing U.S. passengers to travel through on carriers from one of those locations.

The airport has every amenity that travelers can typically find at a major international airport. Food, drink, and car hire options are second to none, and the airport basically functions as a small self-contained city.
