Lorne Guide

Lorne is a quiet town, situated on Louttit Bay in Victoria. The town straddles the Erskine River, and is a major focus of the tourism industry in the area. Thanks to its tourist focus, the town has a great many amenities, and car hire services are only a single one of them. The town has a population of more than 900 people and caters heavily to the tourist industry. Originally, the area surrounding Lorne was the ancestral home of the Gadubanud people, an Aboriginal people, prior to settlement by organized European interests. The town enjoys mild temperatures ranging from 9 degrees Celsius to 19 degrees Celsius.

Thanks to the town's location along the Great Ocean Road, it has been far more accessible since the mid 1920's. While the locals certainly enjoy the area year-round, the population of Lorne increases dramatically during the holiday season.

Lorne is named after the Marquis of Lorne, named so upon his marriage to the Princess Louise, a daughter of Queen Victoria. There is passenger service to larger communities on the Great Ocean Road. Much of the town's annual income stems from the tourist season, though traditionally fishing has provided the livelihood of many of the area's long-term residents. More than 20,000 people swarm to Lorne each year to watch the Pier to Pub swim, along with the Mountain to Surf Run and the Lorne Surf Boat Race. The city is located in Surf Coast Shire, and sits 140 kilometers from the major population centers of Melbourne.
