Byron Bay is home to numerous artists, glass blowers, poets and craftspeople, and has become increasingly popular over the years due to its vast stretches of white sandy beaches. Surfers flock here in their numbers as Byron Bay offers some of the best surfing in the world. To travel around freely we highly advise you opt for car hire in Byron Bay, you won't regret it. Explore Byron Bay

The most popular surf sports in Byron Bay are Wategos Beach and The Pass, which can be found off the tip of Cape Byron. The majority of hostels, apartments and hotels in town offer surfboard and bodyboard rentals. Stretching northwards for around 50kms is Main Beach. The waters here are a lot calmer so you'll find there are more swimmers here than surfers. West of this beach is Belongil Beach, also known as the nudist beach. If you enjoy Scuba diving then take a trip to Julian Rocks, located approximately 3kms offshore. Here, cooler currents moving northwards merge with warm currents moving south creating the perfect habitat for numerous large varieties of sea life.

With car hire in Byron Bay at your disposal why not take a trip to Cape Byron Lighthouse to see the views over Mount Warning. If you hang around for it to get dark you will witness the light from Byron shinning almost 40kms out to sea.  Without car hire visitors can walk to the lighthouse, just follow the beach to the right.

Byron Bay offers its visitors a selection of bars and restaurants. Additionally, Byron Bay becomes festive during the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival, taking place over four days during Easter weekend. Around 30,000 people camp out here and listen to about 80 acts. Alternatively, there is a charming local crafts market the first Sunday of every month.

A nice walk just south of town goes through the rainforest of the Broken Head Nature Reserve. You can also take a daytrip to the hippie retreat of Nimbin. This place is fantastic for fishing, and also offers beautiful beaches for relaxing and sunbathing. Located around 78kms southeast of Byron Bay is Murwillumbah, which is used as a base for hiking up the 1,154-metre Mount Warning. Surrounding the mountain are pretty little country towns, beautiful countryside with banana and sugar cane crops stretching as far as the eye can see.
