La Laguna is situated inland from Santa Cruz in the Aguere Valley on Tenerife. Until 1723, this was the capital of the island. Today, it is the second most important city on the island, with a population of approximately 140,000. Nowadays, it stands as the cultural and religious capital of the island. La Laguna has more museums than any other town in Tenerife. The Casa Antiguo is the perfectly preserved World Heritage historical centre protected by UNESCO. The old quarter of La Laguna is preserved nearly as it was several centuries ago. There you can see many of the original houses of the island from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The city is full of religious buildings to explore, the most well known building, the Cathedral, Nuestra Seńora de los Remedios . Also an icon of the city is Iglesia de Nuestra Seńora de la Concepción.

There are many traditional celebrations that take place in the city such as the Fiesta del Santo Christo de La Laguna - Festival of the Christ. This takes place in September when there are military processions and religious parades. Visit the Plaza del Christo, where there are outdoor cafes known as ventorrillos, and here you can taste the local, traditional food. At the festivals you will be able to experience the real life of La Laguna; the traditional food and drink, listening to the local folk music and watching the people dancing, dressed in the traditional clothes of the islanders. This is an opportunity to buy souvenirs of your visit from the local vendors.
