Nikola Vaptsarov was trained and worked as a machine engineer for most of his life. He wrote poetry in his spare time. 'Motoring Verses', which was released in 1940, was his only published work during his lifetime. Other collections of his work have since been published. Vaptsarov's work has been translated in more than 50 languages around the world. Vaptsarov was also an underground communist, and this ultimately lead to his death. He was arrested and executed by a firing squad at the monument site on 39 Blvd Bulgaria in 1942.

The monument is shaped as an open triangle. This monument represents the first of its kind in the world and is definitely worth a visit to see. In 2009, a bell tower with an eternal flame will be added to the monument in celebration of Vaptsarov's 100th birthday. The bell is planned to toll every year on the date of Vaptsarov's death.

The monument is located near the Hilton Hotel in Sofia and it is hoped that tourists and Bulgarians alike will cone to appreciate the tribute to poetry and to Vaptsarov.
