Car Hire Santo Domingo Airport - Mini guide to Santo Domingo Airport
Santo Domingo Airport or Las Americas International Airport is located to the east of Santo Domingo. It is just thirty minutes drive from the city centre.
Santo Domingo is on the south-east coast of the Dominican Republic, halfway between the western border with Haiti and the eastern coast. This makes it possible to explore the north and the east coasts.
To the west of Santo Domingo are the Pomier caves, a series of fifty-five caves. The caves were first discovered in 1851 and contain the largest collection of cave art in the Caribbean. The art is 2,000 years old and was created by the Taino, Carib and Igneri, the pre-Colombian indigenous people. Although there has been some damage caused by limestone mining nearby, the anthropological importance of the caves is such that they have now been protected.
Boca Chica is to the east of Santo Domingo Airport, a short fifteen minute drive away. In the Trujillo era this resort was popular with wealthy Dominicans from the capital. Boca Chica is famous for its white sand beach which is located in a cove, protected by a reef. This geographical feature keeps the waters of the cove shallow, clear and calm which makes it ideal for children. In addition to swimming, water sports such as jet skiing, snorkelling and kayaking activities are available. At night the resort comes alive with restaurants, night clubs and concerts.
To the north of Santo Domingo Airport you will find the town of Jarabacoa in the heart of the Cordillera mountain range. The town has become increasingly popular with those wanting a more active holiday. The surrounding area offers tall pines, high waterfalls and river rapids. The town is also the departure point for those wishing to scale the highest peak in the Dominican Republic, Pico Duarte. Local companies offer river rafting, horseback rides, kayaking, paragliding, climbing.
Car hire in the Dominican Republic is expensive but if you are intending to travel between towns or explore the coastline hiring is advisable. It is best to pre-book a car with an international car rental firm or choose a reputable local firm such as Honda or Nelly.
