Car Hire San Remo - Mini guide to San Remo

San Remo, located in a wide inlet between Capo Verde and Capo Nero, is known as the 'Town of Flowers', and its lush gardens, vibrant flower beds and tropical-style parks bear testament to its nickname.

Added to its floral beauty is the charm of the surrounding landscape and its appealing architecture, along with an exciting social scene which centres on its famous casino.

San Remo's historical quarter is known as La Pigna, and is an enchanting, medieval town of steep, snaking streets, tiny squares and houses perched precariously on the slopes of the hill. Above La Pigna, and appearing to watch over it, is the Baroque Sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa. Outside the old town, the two-kilometre-long Corso degli Inglesi is one of San Remo's most beautiful and peaceful streets. Wandering down its length, which is lined with villas from the 19th and 20th centuries, is a pleasurable and relaxing pastime.

San Remo's leisure options span a broad range. A plethora of restaurants, shops and boutiques can be found in the town centre, and a lively market takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays in Piazza Eroi Sanremesi. Sporting facilities are extensive and tennis, golfing, baseball, windsurfing, sailing, swimming, scuba diving and horseback riding are all popular pursuits. The San Remo Casino, established in 1905, provides a hub of night-time activity and entertainment.

At the nearby town of Balzi Rossi on the French border, you can visit impressive caves where Paleolithic people once lived. Close by are the exquisite gardens of Villa Hanbury. Alternatively, Apricale is a precious town of narrow alleyways, frescoes and artists' workshops, while Bajordo is known for its breathtaking views of the Ligurian Alps.

San Remo is accessible by car via the A10 from Genoa or France. It is also a major stopover for trains, especially from Genoa. The train journey to Rome takes approximately eight hours. Buses connect San Remo with other major cities in Italy. Additionally, Nice and Genoa airports are situated within easy driving distance from San Remo; both receive local and international flights.
