Mini guide to Samos
This island is among the more mountainous and forested of Aegean isles. Its wild beauty is evident as you approach the island from the air. The mountains that rise into the clouds are covered with cypresses and their slopes descend rapidly into deep ravines. It is ideal for trekking and mountain biking.
The north coast of the island is wild and steep, with mountains rising abruptly from the water's edge. One of the most interesting areas to explore on this part of the island is the Platanakia area, known for its rushing streams, lush valleys, and picturesque mountain villages.
Vathi on the northeast coast and Karlovassi to the northwest are the two principal ports of Samos, and the island's largest towns. Vathis old town, Ano Vathi, has steep narrow streets and is ideal for a pleasant walk. Vathi also contains a museum featuring sculpture from the Hellenistic period.
The south coast of the island near the resort town of Pithagorio has some decent beaches though Micro Seitani and Megalo Seitani in the north are considered the best. The north coast offers good hiking and biking trails as well. Afterwards, if you are looking for nightlife or a good meal, Vathi, Karlovassi and Pithagorio all have good options.
Some of the mountain villages on the island are lovely and can be reached by car. If you are interested in an escape from the sometimes-hectic seaside, try Manolates or Vourliotes. Both are quiet and hospitable.
Both Olympic Airways and Avionic Airways offer daily frights between Samos and Athens. Athens has connecting to flights to cities around the world.
