Car Hire in Samos - Getting to Samos

Since Samos is a small island in the Aegean Sea, the only two ways to arrive are by sea or by air. There are at least three daily flights between Athens and Samos all year round, and five in the summer. The airport on Samos is three kilometres from Pithagorio, on the road to Ireon. From the airport, it’s easy to take a taxi to your hotel, and a ride to Samos (Vathi) costs about €14.

The boat trip from the main Greek port of Piraeus (near Athens) can be very romantic if you are in the right mood. However, the boats move slowly, so it can also be very boring as the journey takes many hours. Thus, many holidaymakers choose the swifter alternative of arriving by plane.

If you choose to arrive by boat, there are three ports on Samos. The principal one is at Samos (Vathi), but there are others at Karlovassi and Pithagorio, so be careful that you do not get off at the wrong port.

There are daily boats (sometimes two) from Piraeus to Karlovassi and Samos. There are also ferries every day or every second day from Samos to Mykonos, and another service three times a week to from Samos to Hios via Karlovassi. There is also a weekly service connecting Samos with Rhodes, Lesvos and Alexandoupoli. In summer, ferries run to Kavala on the Macedonian coast, and hydrofoils operate to the Dodecanese Islands.
