Car Hire in Parque Principado - Mini guide to Parque Principado
Santander, the capital of Cantabria, is situated on the Bay of Biscay, between the mountains and the sea. The city has two sections. Firstly, there is the commercial quarter, where there are shops, historical areas and tourist attractions. The second area is the suburb of El Sardinero, which is a beach resort, where you can also find the former Royal Palace and the casino.
The history of Santander can be discovered through its buildings. Visit the Cathedral, the Palacio de Pronillo and the Edificio del Banco de Espana. Much of Santander’s history was lost in 1941, when fire destroyed the old part of town.
The cuisine of Santander has a personality of its own. Visit the restaurants Bombi and Posada de la Marto to experience the local meat dishes. The wonderful fish of the area can be experienced in the fish restaurants in the Barrio Pesquero, the old fishing quarter, or the Puerto Chino, the small port. Fish restaurants of note are, Las Penucas, Rhin and Del Pueto. The seafood to excite your palette will include, sea bass, sole, hake, jargo cabracho and gilt-head sardines.
Tourist attractions are plentiful in the area. Visit the Pre historia, a history museum dedicated to the area, and the Maritimo, a museum about the local maritime history and life. Go for walks along the three beaches, Bikinis, Camella and Concho. Eventually, you will arrive at the Peninsula de la Magdalena, passing the retreat of the former Royal Family on your way, the Palalcio Real.
