Exploring Hanover
Hannover is surrounded by many culturally diverse districts which are interesting to explore.
A number of impressive ancient churches can be found in the Hannover region such as Idensen, Mandelsloh and Ronnenberg, as well as a monastery and several old convents. The oldest nunnery is the Stift of Wunstorf, established in 871 AD. Others are Barsinghausen, Mariensee, Wennigsen and Wülfinghausen.
A lovely daytrip can be made to the picturesque town of Celle, the 700-year-old framework town which offers modern life besides ancient facades. The Renaissance Herrenschloss was the former center of Celle, and has become a popular tourist destination. Inside the castle is the Schlosstheater, the oldest preserved theatre in Germany, with regular performances held today.
A day at the Steinhuder Meer provides a wealth of oudoor activities, including a bathing island, sailboats, beautiful promenades and the Wilhelmstein island with an old fortress. The interesting Fisher and Weaver Museum and the Childrens World Museum are also worth visiting.
