Car Hire Grantham - Mini guide to Grantham

Grantham’s location on Lincolnshire’s border with Leicestershire has figured significantly in its history as an important transportation hub for the East England region. The legacy of this importance is still visible today, with the town retaining much of its magnificent architectural heritage.

Fulbeck Hall is proudly perched atop the picturesque limestone hills that run from Grantham to Lincoln, affording stunning views of the Trent Valley below. The hall houses an excellent museum depicting the exploits of the 1st Airborne Division, which used the hall as a headquarters during WWII. After touring the stately museum, you can relax by strolling through the 11 acres of formal gardens that make up the grounds of the hall.

Wandering around the town, you will come across remnants of Grantham’s glory days, particularly the charming coaching inns. Representative of these are the Beehive Inn at Castlegate and the Angel Inn. Grantham is surrounded by lovely historic homes and gardens such as Belton House, Harlaxton Manor Gardens, and Grantham House.

Sir Isaac Newton is one of the town’s most famous sons, and a section of the Grantham Museum displays some of his memorabilia. You can also visit his birthplace and home, Woolsthorpe Manor, located to the south of the town.

Grantham has quality accommodation and a few pleasant restaurants. Nightlife is rather subdued, with several charming pubs providing a quaint atmosphere for quiet drinks and hearty meals.

Options for daytrips from Grantham abound, with plenty of quaint country towns and historic sites within easy reach. The scenic A17 road, leading east from Stamford through the Fens, and passing imposing medieval churches, is very popular.

Stamford itself is worth a morning or afternoon, with famous Burghley House as the highlight. Farther away are Lincoln, with its magnificent cathedral, and the Lincolnshire Wolds, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Not to be left out, beach lovers can head to the renowned resort town of Skegness, with its lovely coastline featuring the Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve.

Grantham is conveniently located off the A1 from Newark, the A607 from Melton Mowbray and the A52 from Boston. The town is on the main London–Northeast railway line, so connections to London are frequent and rapid. There are reasonable bus services to the larger towns in the region, however, to visit picturesque villages you’ll need your own car. The nearest airports are Leeds-Bradford, Manchester and East Midlands.
