Mini guide to Algarve
With towering cliffs and secluded beaches, the Atlantic-facing Algarve coast is one of Europes loveliest. Thousands flock to this southern region of Portugal every summer to enjoy plentiful sun, laid-back local charm, and sumptuous seafood.
Faro, with its international airport, is the hub of the region. Both modern and ancient, the town is still surrounded by remnants of Roman walls and includes the Renaissance inspired Nossa Senhora da Assuncão Convent and São Francisco Church. Strolling around the Praade Dom Francisco Gomes (port area) is delightful. There are loads of places to eat, and accommodation is plentiful, with all tourist conveniences available.
Lagos has a much more appealing coastal location and attracts the crowds. It also boasts many historic buildings and Renaissance or Baroque churches, notably the São João Hermitage (8th-9th centuries).
Other attractions include: Forte do Pau da Bandeira, the old slave market, and a charming marina. Also, drop by Meia Praia, a lively, sweeping beach.
Portimão has a cosmopolitan atmosphere, with golden sands framed by cliffs and rocks, a rich heritage of historical monuments and the eternal natural beauty of the Rio de Alvor.
Sagres is dramatically situated on the cliff-edges of mainland Europes western-most point. It was here that five centuries ago Prince Henry set up a school of navigation that played a crucial role in the Portuguese discoveries. Apart from the Nossa Senhora da Graça Hermitage, you can visit the magnificent fortress (14th century) and 500-year-old Rosados-Ventos (a 43-metre-diameter compass rose).
By car you can visit and explore Silves, Tavira, Monchique, and the many charming coastal resort villages.
