The inner city has an abundance of sights, including the House of Witten, a former manor house that now serves as the cultural centre for the city. From here you will be able to see the beautiful and imposing Helen tower built in 1858, and just a short walk (or even shorter drive away) is the Garden City showcasing some stunning collections of local fauna.

The Märkisches Museum of Contemporary Art has collections primarily from the 1900s right up to present-day works of German artists and specialises in paintings and graphic art. Two of its most important exhibits are the Engelbert statue from the 13th century and the Baroque-Strunckede tomb. It is open all year round, but times are seasonal. Other museums to enjoy include the Museum of Diakonia plant Ruhr which contains medical devices from the last century. The exhibits include details on how the devices were used and the effects these ‘treatments’ may have had on patients. Not one for the faint-hearted! There is also the Nightingale Colliery, which is the oldest deep mine on the Ruhr, and is now a coal mining museum. The Hebezeugmuseum has private exhibitions of machines used in industry through the years; a must for anyone interested in the trades.

The Witten Children and Youth Theatre troop, a nationally and internationally renowned group, give regular performances at different venues around the city and attendance ensures a great night out.

For those that prefer the outdoors, bicycle rental can be organised to take advantage of the nearby mountain range tracks, and there are plenty of boat rental facilities to allow you to take trips on the Ruhr and lake Kemnader.
