Cuitadella is situated in the west of Menorca. Cituadella was the former capital of the island until the British moved it to Mahon in the 18th century. However, it is still the religious capital of the island.

There is plenty to see for the tourist interested in history. From the 17th century is the Castell Sant Nicolas, which was originally a defence tower but now is used as an exhibition centre. The Cathedral has a particularly interesting history, as this was originally a mosque. This was claimed for Christianity in the 13th century. The Place de’s Born is the main square. This gives you a good vantage point to see the harbour. The harbour in Cituadella is one of the smallest ports in the Mediterranean. The obelisk in the centre of the square records the history of the 16th century when the moors attacked the town. Both the square and the narrow streets leading from it need to be explored, all being typical of the Mediterranean way of life.

The festival to see on Menorca is held every year in Cituadella on the 23-24 June. This is called the Festes de Sant Joan.

Market days are held on Friday and Saturday in the town. The day usually finishes at around mid-day. The opening hours for the shops are from 9a.m to 1-30p.m and from 4-30 p.m. to 8-30 p.m. These hours may vary.

Travelling to Cituadella from the airport takes only 45 minutes, with buses and taxis all going through Mahon.
