Versailles is a wealthy suburb of Paris located about 10.6 miles (17 kms) southwest of France’s capital city. It is connected by high speed TGV trains to Rouen, Lyon and Avignon as well as the winter sports resorts. There are three railway stations serving Versailles used by different railway lines (SCNF or RER) coming from Paris.

Versailles-Rive Gauche Station, also called Versailles-Château, is the terminus of line RER C that runs from Paris Gare d’Austerlitz via Notre-Dame, the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and Les Invalides to the Eiffel Tower. Trains depart about every 20 or 30 minutes, and the journey lasts approximately 40 minutes. This station is the nearest to the Château de Versailles at a walking distance of 7 to 10 minutes.

Situated close to the vibrant Halles shopping quarter, Versailles-Rive Droite station is the terminus of an SNCF line (Transilien) starting at Paris Saint Lazare Station in the Opéra district, with 1 train leaving every 15 minutes. At La Défense Station, this line links with RER A that carries you from central locations in Paris such as Place de l'Etoile, Opéra or Gare de Lyon.

Alternatively, you can get to the palace by catching an SNCF (mainline) train from Paris Gare Montparnasse to Versailles-Chantiers Station, which is a major railway hub. The two latter train stations are sited a bit further from the château.
