Mini guide to Troyes
Troyes
Located on the famous Seine River in the department of Aube, the city of Troyes features one of the country’s most appealing medieval centres. The old town’s atmospheric streets, lined with tall historic houses, surround the impressive cathedral. The Hotel du Lion Noir, Hotel de Marisy and the town hall are great examples of typical Renaissance architecture. All three remarkable buildings date back to the 16th century.
Downtown Troyes is characterised by the Gothic Saint Peter Cathedral while also located here are many churches, each with its own unique attractions and features. Saint Remy Church especially is a must-see while St Jean au Marché Church is mostly famous for being the church where Catherine of France and Henry V married.
The city also represents several fascinating museums. Particularly noteworthy are the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology, the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Tools and Workmen.
The city of Troyes is often called: ‘la cité en forme de bouchon de champagne’ by the locals, which in English means: ‘the city in the form of a champagne cork’. However, this remarkable shape can only be seen from the air.
Visitors may hire a car in Troyes to fully explore the Champagne-Ardenne region. However, local car hire firms in the city do not always provide reliable services and therefore it is better to pre-book a rental vehicle online. The renowned Champagne road offers a highly enjoyable drive past quaint villages, historic farmhouses, Gothic cathedrals and gorgeous landscapes filled with tranquil vineyards.
