Terneuzen is a city that is located in the southwestern region of the Netherlands in the province of Zeeland. This is located right in the middle of Zeelandic Flanders. Terneuzen is the most populous city of the whole province with 55,000 people calling it home.
Right next to the city of Terneuzen is the Westerschelde estuary. The Westerschelde Tunnel, open since March of 2003, is one of the best ways to gain access to the city.
Terneuzen’s history goes back all the way to 1325, when it was first mentioned in writing. It is a strategically placed city because the port on the waterways led to Ghent, now in present-day Belgium. This is still an important shipping route for the city. The port located in Terneuzen is actually the third largest port in the Netherlands, just behind Rotterdam and Amsterdam. West of this rout lies the home of the largest plant that Dow Chemical Company owns outside of the United States.
Ternzeuzen’s claim to fame is that it is supposedly is the home of the Flying Dutchman Van der Decken. The Flying Dutchman was a captain who has cursed God and was then condemned to sail the sea forever. The story is interpreted in a book by Frederick Marryat and the Richard Wagner opera.
