Mini guide to Tel Aviv
Tel Aviv is the de facto political and business capital of Israel. As a relatively new city, (only 90 years old), the city is short on the historical sites that so many other cities in this country have, but long on entertainment and modernism. However, nearby Jaffa, (now incorporated into Tel Aviv,) does have sights and thousands of years of history.
As Tel Aviv is Israels city of fun, its most renowned attractions are its beaches, which many say are the best in the Middle East. Year round you will find people from all over the world enjoying these popular strips.
If you are looking for history and culture in Tel Aviv proper, try the Diaspora Museum, which follows the history of Jewish culture abroad, or the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Or if you like, you can go down to Old Jaffa and see the Franciscan Monastery of St. Peter which was built above a medieval citadel or, nearby, you can tour the remnants of a 3rd century BC catacomb.
For entertainment, take a stroll through Old Jaffa. Here you will find numerous restaurants and nightspots. Or if you prefer a more modern feel, stay in Moghrabi Square in the center of Tel Aviv. Here youll find bars, nightclubs, restaurants and hotels.
As Israel is a fairly small country in terms of landmass, there are many sights that are easily accessible by car from Tel Aviv. Jerusalem and Nazareth are among the most historic religious cities in the world, others are lesser known but equally interesting, such as Akko, a city that has architecture rivaling that of Jerusalem.
Unfortunately blighted by Israels ongoing secular violence, Tel Aviv continues to go about its business like any cosmopolitan European city and most of its residence look forward to a safer time. Visitors are advised to consult the news regarding the safety of this city.
From the airport in Tel Aviv it is possible to get flights to and from many cities in Europe and some in North America. It also has the tightest airport security in the world.
